NBA All-Star Week will open with a cultural moment. As the league gathers its biggest names, a different spotlight will shine on a story that helped redefine how women’s basketball is seen on screen.
Twenty-five years after its release, the film remains part of the larger conversation around representation, opportunity, and visibility in women’s sports. Its presence during All-Star Week shows how the story has stayed woven into basketball culture.
‘Love & Basketball’ reunion event at NBA All-Star weekend
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Love & Basketball will launch the HBCU First LOOK Film Festival with a featured panel during NBA All-Star Week. The event is scheduled for Feb. 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. PT at the Maybourne Beverly Hills and will include a reception followed by a panel discussion centered on the film’s cultural impact on women’s sports.
CNN anchor Laura Coates is set to moderate the conversation titled “25 Years of Love & Basketball: A Celebration of Women in Sports.” The panel brings together Prince-Bythewood, lead actor Sanaa Lathan, sports journalist Cari Champion, and broadcasting pioneer Jayne Kennedy, the first Black woman sportscaster on national network television, per Variety.
OWN will extend the anniversary celebration with a Valentine’s Day airing of the film on Feb. 14. Presenting sponsors for the event include CNN, TNT Sports, Black Girl Vitamins, OWN, and Visit East Point. The HBCU First LOOK Film Festival will return to Howard University from Nov. 5 to 7.
‘Love & Basketball’ celebrates 25th anniversary
The film’s influence continues to expand into fashion and modern sports culture. Streetwear brand Playa Society has partnered with Prince-Bythewood on the first licensed capsule collection inspired by the film. The collaboration marks the first time Love & Basketball has officially released its logo and assets for apparel.
The campaign features New York Liberty players Natasha Cloud and Isabelle Harrison and includes a hoodie, a “Ball Better Than You” T-shirt, and a hand-illustrated “Lil Monica” design. Prince-Bythewood reflected on the project’s meaning, saying, “I am so humbled by the enduring impact of the film on both ballers and non-athletes, who are inspired by characters who believe in themselves enough to fight for an impossible dream.” Playa Society founder Esther Wallace added, “This collection is a reflection of the influence this film has had on culture, athletics, and storytelling, and I'm proud that Playa Society can help bring that legacy into the present.”
Love & Basketball is available for rent on Prime Video and other VOD platforms.
