NBA injury report: Scary fall on Cleveland Cavaliers’ court sends Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić into brief injury scare
LeBron James, a native of Cleveland, had an emotional and joyous evening until the Cavaliers destroyed the Lakers 129-99 in a scorching second half. However, Luka Dončić's ankle niggle on the Cavaliers' elevated floor during the first half gave Los Angeles fans quite the worry.
Due to what seemed to be a leg injury, Los Angeles Lakers player Luka Doncic entered the locker room during the team's Wednesday game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Doncic returned to pedaling after scoring a triple in the first quarter. However, he unintentionally tumbled from the raised court of the Cavaliers. He eventually grasped his lower left leg following the play.
When Lakers player Luka Dončić walked in the space between the Cleveland Cavaliers' home court and the bench during Wednesday's first quarter, he seemed to sustain a left leg injury.
In his own media appearances, Docic was somewhat reticent about the matter, even going so far as to blame himself. However, a fresh video that surfaced on Thursday revealed that he was now rather upset about it.
Bleacher Report shared a video of Dončić shouting from the "Post Daws" TikTok account on X:
“Who the f--- made this court, god-----!”
After making a fading 3-pointer in front of the Lakers bench, Dončić tumbled backwards off the court. His left foot slipped as he hopped backward, causing him to fall. He grabbed at his lower left thigh and remained on the ground for a long time.
“I kind of got scared,” Dončić said after the Lakers’ 129-99 loss to Cleveland. “It wasn’t a great feeling, and, looking back at the video, I think I got a little bit lucky.”
He hardly put any weight on the leg as he hobbled to the changing room. Even though his ankle was obviously bothering him, he made a comeback to the game later in the quarter.
The Slovenian celebrity told reporters:
“It’s the only court that’s like this… So I guess it’s my fault. So I’ll stop jumping like that. There’s been a number of injuries over the years in this building because of the floor..”
With the arena floor a few inches below the playing surface, the Cavaliers boast the only elevated court in the NBA. When questioned about Dončić's injuries, coach Redick responded as follows. Redick gave a direct response when asked why the floor's design is still the same in spite of those injuries. Redick went on:
“That’s way above my pay grade. It is absolutely a safety hazard… I don’t know why it’s still like that. I don’t. You can lodge formal complaints. A lot of times you don’t see any change when you lodge a formal complaint.”
The Lakers are certainly grateful that Dončić's injury wasn't severe, but his remarks likely resonated with L.A. When they saw the play, there were admirers everywhere.
The Cavaliers share an arena with the AHL's Cleveland Monsters, therefore the floor is raised to accommodate the layer of hockey ice underneath; however, the why of Dončić's reasoning is known.
