The Milwaukee Bucks are moving closer to trading Giannis Antetokounmpo, and if they do, Bobby Portis may well be part of the deal. According to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, there is "a growing belief in some corners" that any Giannis trade package would include the veteran forward. NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer added that the "growing expectation throughout the NBA" is that a trade happens before the draft on June 23–24. The Bucks are reportedly operating as if they will pick up an extra first-round pick alongside their No. 10 selection after moving Antetokounmpo.

Latest Insider Update

Tim Reynolds (AP): Portis is highly likely to be bundled in any impending Giannis trade

Potential Return

Draft capital, young assets, and necessary salary filler

Boston and Miami are the two destinations Giannis is said to prefer, which makes them the most likely spots for Portis, too. The Celtics, already built to compete, could use a physical, vocal forward who doesn't need the ball to be useful. Miami's style is arguably the best fit for what Portis brings.Portland is also in the conversation, but more as a third team helping facilitate a larger deal. The Blazers are owed assets from the Damian Lillard trade Milwaukee made before the 2023–24 season, and a three-way structure could help the Bucks reclaim some of that draft capital.

What insiders are saying

"A growing belief in some corners that any trade for Antetokounmpo would include Bucks veteran forward Bobby Portis." - Tim Reynolds, Associated Press"The growing expectation throughout the NBA is that the Bucks will trade Antetokounmpo before the NBA draft on June 23-24." - Marc Stein & Jake FischerSources across the league are increasingly treating a Giannis trade as a when, not an if. Including Portis in the package would sweeten the deal considerably, giving any acquiring team a proven role player who has already won a championship in Milwaukee. For the Bucks, it also helps them move a significant salary while the trade value is still high.

Contract details and salary cap implications

Bobby Portis: contract breakdownAccording to Spotrac, Portis signed a three-year, $43.56 million deal with Milwaukee that runs through 2026-27, with a player option for 2027-28. His average annual value sits around $14.52 million. That contract is fully guaranteed, which limits how much flexibility a trading team gets, but it's also a manageable number for a contender looking to add depth.

How a trade impacts both teams

For Milwaukee, trading both players is essentially a rebuild trigger. Losing Giannis is one thing, but sending Portis out, too, removes the last visible link to their 2021 title core. The Bucks would be banking on draft capital and young players to rebuild around, which is a longer road but perhaps a more honest one given where the franchise currently sits. For the acquiring team, getting Portis alongside Giannis is a genuine bonus. He shot 45.6 percent from three last season, second in the NBA, and gives a contender a physical, communicative presence who has proven he can perform in high-leverage moments. The Stanley Cup race equivalent here is real. Any team landing Giannis with Portis attached is immediately a Finals threat. The question is whether Milwaukee gets enough in return to make this more than a painful reset.

Bobby Portis and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been familiar faces in Milwaukee’s frontcourt for years. Portis, who stands 2.06 meters tall and weighs 113 kilograms, was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 22nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft after playing at Arkansas. Antetokounmpo, meanwhile, came into the league two years earlier when the Bucks took him with the 15th overall pick in 2013. At 2.11 meters and 110 kilograms, Giannis is now entering his 12th NBA season and has grown into one of the league’s most dominant players, while Portis has carved out a valuable role as one of Milwaukee’s most reliable contributors.
