Odell Beckham Jr. officially signed with the New York Giants on June 1, returning to the franchise that drafted him 12th overall in 2014. He passed his physical at the East Rutherford facility and the deal was made official Monday. Beckham, along with JuJu Smith-Schuster and Braxton Berrios, signed veteran minimum contracts worth $1.3 million, with all three competing for roster spots through training camp. Hours after the news broke, OBJ posted an Instagram reel with career highlights and a caption that read: "Nothin was ever given to me I worked for everything I have. Never give up on urself. Home Team i'm back…. Let's get itttt." Meanwhile, his ex Lauren Wood has something to say about their relationship now.
What did Lauren Wood say about OBJ's Giants return?
The reunion brought football headlines, but a podcast episode the next day added another layer. On June 2, Lauren Wood, Beckham's former partner and mother of his four-year-old son Zydn, appeared on "The Mamacita Mic" and spoke openly about where things stand between them now.
Wood didn't mince words. "Mine and [Odell's] relationship has grown so much better, and [there's] just more respect for each other after we split. Then, just learning co-parenting on the fly. We had a solid friendship to begin with. Obviously, when romance and intimacy get involved, it can muddle it. But then we split up, [and] you got through the emotions and the healing and all that, but then we ended up, we came back together on a right course where we just prioritize Zydn's happiness and his safety," she said.
She was clear that what they have now works better than what they had before. "We both agree that [it's] better this way than being in a romantic relationship. It can make things more difficult than it needs to be, for sure. So yeah. I think we just figured out our friendship is the meat and potatoes of it."
Wood also acknowledged how difficult the split was at the time. "We were in a four-year relationship. Our baby was nine months old. We didn't even make it a year [after having our child]. Breaking up is the last thing I wanted to do, but I had to. I was gonna lose myself." She described what remains now simply: "[Odell and I] just have love for each other. And it's not even that romantic, no. Just family."
On the football side, Giants head coach John Harbaugh spoke about Beckham's mindset heading into this stint. "The thing I love about Odell is right now he's in such a good place in terms of his humility. He wants to contribute. He wants to help the young guys. It's not going to be the old Odell. It's going to be a different version, the 2.0 Odell I guess you would say."
Harbaugh's familiarity with Beckham from their time together in Baltimore in 2023 was likely the driving force behind this signing, more than nostalgia. Beckham sat out the entire 2025 season after accepting a six-game suspension and remaining unsigned. With Malik Nabers recovering from an ACL tear and Wan'Dale Robinson gone in free agency, there's a clear opening in the Giants' receiver room that Beckham could fill.
Whether he recaptures anything close to his Giants prime remains to be seen. But heading into training camp, both his professional and personal situations seem settled. That's more than could be said for much of the last decade.
