Barry Trotz announces retirement as Nashville Predators general manager ahead of NHL trade deadline

After nearly three decades in professional hockey, Barry Trotz has decided to step down as general manager of the Nashville Predators. Known for his meticulous approach to building competitive teams, Trotz informed majority owner Bill Haslam of his decision last December. While his choice is motivated by a desire to focus on family, he will remain with the organization until a successor is found, ensuring a smooth transition.

In 2023, Trotz became the new general manager, taking over for David Poile, who had been in charge for a long time; Trotz made big moves in free agency, signing Stanley Cup winners Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault. As well as defenseman Brady Skjei, the team had a rough season in 2024–25 with 52 losses and not making the playoffs. He has always wanted to put together a team that can win the Stanley Cup, not just make it to the playoffs.

Even though Trotz is about to retire, he will still be making decisions for the Nashville Predators until the NHL trade deadline on March 6. He will also be thinking about the futures of Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei, all of whom have contracts that last for more than one year but are getting older.

Trotz is confident that the team can stay competitive with new leadership because the core of the organization, which includes captain Roman Josi, top forward Filip Forsberg, and goaltender Juuse Saros, is still strong.

Predators CEO Sean Henry praised Trotz's work to make Nashville a model NHL franchise both on and off the ice. Trotz’s legacy includes turning the expansion-era Predators into a respected team and winning a Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals in 2018. As the organization searches for a new GM, Trotz hopes his work lays the groundwork for continued success in the NHL.
