Edmonton Oilers look to get their first three-game win streak as they host San Jose Sharks on Thursday
The Edmonton Oilers enter tonight's matchup against the San Jose Sharks with serious momentum, having dominated their Pacific Division rivals in recent memory. In their last 15 meetings, the Sharks have been successful once.
However, it's been nearly 25 months since San Jose scored that win over the Oilers, as the home side has dominated their last six contests. But while Edmonton is looking eager to get its first three-game win streak, San Jose’s rookie sensation Macklin Celebrini aims to change that.
The San Jose Sharks have won three of their last four games as they look to take a swing at Edmonton tonight and get closer to that wildcard spot in the Pacific Division. But with their top six forward group showing no sign of slowing down, the Oilers look to get the win.
Leading the charge is Zach Hyman, who continues his torrid scoring pace. Since December 11, Hyman has been the NHL's most prolific goal scorer with 19 tallies in just 24 games. His hot streak has carried into the Sharks series specifically, where he's been particularly dangerous.
In his last five games against the away side, Hyman boasts as many points with three goals and two assists, and a consistent ability to find the back of the net. His form since his return from injury has driven Edmonton’s offensive firepower and has been a big part of the franchise’s dominance.
On the other hand, linemate Leon Draisaitl is looking as dangerous as ever. With 1,030 career points, the German superstar remains just four points shy of tying franchise legend Mark Messier for fourth place on Edmonton’s all-time scoring list.
While McDavid has been in contention for the Art Ross Trophy, Draisaitl has played the support role quite well this season, also netting 25 goals across 51 outings. The winger just celebrated scoring his 1,000th career point last month and scored his 600th assist last week.
With that kind of consistency, the chances don’t look good for the Sharks, but the away team has one thing working out for them, and that’s Celebrini. The 19-year-old has been sensational this season, with the youngster scoring 78 points across 51 games.
With him on their side, tonight represents another opportunity for the Sharks to test themselves against the league's elite and perhaps find a way to slow down an Edmonton attack that's been firing on all cylinders. Breaking the Oilers' stranglehold on this series would require their best effort of the season.
