The Vegas Golden Knights have made a dramatic last-minute coaching change, firing the team’s head coach, Bruce Cassidy, and signing veteran NHL coach John Tortorella to steer the team through the final stretch of the 2025-26 regular season and, if possible, into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. According to reports, the coaching change came with just eight games left in the regular season, showing the team is making an aggressive push ahead of the playoffs.

It is to be noted that Bruce Cassidy has been at the helm of the Vegas Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup win in 2023, and in came John Tordella to finish out the year. Earlier, Tortorella coached the Flyers for nearly three seasons, with a record of 97-107-33. Previously, he was suspended for two games and fined $50,000 for arguing with referees. The Vegas Golden Knights made a shocking late-season move by firing head coach Bruce Cassidy and hiring veteran coach John Tortorella, a decision that could significantly impact their Stanley Cup chances this season.

According to General Manager Kelly McCrimmon, the team needed a new direction and believes that Tortorella's experience can help the team at a crucial point in the season. Despite recent struggles, including losing six of their last seven games, the Golden Knights are still in a playoff position, which is why management decided to bring in Tortorella to provide a late-season spark.


It is important to note that Tortorella is a veteran 2004 Stanley Cup–winning head coach with more than two decades of NHL experience. With this joining, he will return to the league after a season away, having recently served as an assistant with the gold‑medal‑winning U.S. team at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Considering his rich experience in managing a team, Tortorella’s arrival could greatly impact the Vegas Golden Knights in their playoff push.

As for Cassidy, he spent four seasons with the Golden Knights, leading them to a record of 178-99-43 in 320 regular-season games, which also included two 50-win seasons, and the franchise’s first Stanley Cup victory. However, the season did not go well with Cassidy, and thus, it resulted in the veteran bench boss losing his job.

Further, the Golden Knights enter the week with a 32-26-16 record, with 80 points, sitting third in the Pacific Division. It is for sure that they are taking a risk by changing coaches so late in the season, but if Tortorella can quickly fix the team's defensive and goaltending issues, Vegas could become a dangerous team in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
