As per TSN, Nylander is playing his 10th full season in Toronto, and this is the first time the Leafs will miss the playoffs. They sit 12 points out with nine games remaining. Considering this season’s NHL standings, the Toronto Maple Leafs could not qualify for the top ten ranks and currently sit in the 14th position. They have scored 31-29-13 and 75 points so far in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.

Apart from this, the Maple Leafs had faced a major setback this time with their captain, Auston Matthews’ unexpected exit from the team for the remainder of the season due to his MCL injury sustained during a match with the Anaheim Ducks.

The future role of William Nylander with the Toronto Maple Leafs is beginning to draw a lot of attention after a disappointing season for the team. As per reports, Toronto’s season has gone from bad to worse, and the team is now on the verge of missing the playoffs. This poor performance displayed by the team has led to internal evaluations across the organization and even prompted trade speculations too.

Amid the struggles, Nylander was asked where he believes things went wrong, but the star forward chose not to reveal much, saying he has his own thoughts but would prefer to keep them to himself. “I have my thoughts about maybe some stuff. But, I mean, that’s something I’m going to keep to myself,” Nylander stated.

Discussing his situation, Craig Berube stated, “Obviously, it’s not a great situation for anybody, and he’s not used to this situation for sure. But, at the same time, he understands that we’ve still got games to play. We have to do a good job with competing and playing the right way.”


Nylander further stated about the team's current situation; however, despite that, he is trying to deal the situation with optimism, "It has been really tough,” Nylander noted. “But now it’s been a little while where you’ve been able to digest it a little bit more and think about it so, I mean, it’s still an awful feeling.”

As per reports, Nylander is only averaging 2.28 shots per game this season, which is down from his career average of 2.86. Apart from this, according to the NHL, Nylander has 25 goals, 42 assists, and 67 points in 56 games played.

Meanwhile, this situation has prompted trade speculation about moving Nylander due to his performance, rather than moving Leafs captain Auston Matthews, who is currently recovering from injury.
