Johnny Jr. was born in February 2024, just months before his father and uncle Matthew were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver while riding bicycles near their New Jersey hometown on August 29, 2024. The tragedy occurred the night before their sister Katie's wedding.

The Gaudreau family attended Team USA's 6-2 semifinal victory over Slovakia on Friday. Johnny's widow, Meredith, brought their daughter, Noa, to watch the Americans advance to the gold medal game. The family's presence provided powerful support for a team honoring Johnny's legacy throughout the tournament.

Johnny's number 13 jersey has hung in Team USA's locker room at every game during Milano Cortina 2026. The blue sweater serves as a constant reminder of the player who should be skating alongside his teammates in pursuit of Olympic glory.

Dylan Larkin played with Johnny at multiple World Championships and expressed what the tribute means to the current roster. The Detroit Red Wings forward emphasized that Johnny remains on their minds as they compete.

"It means everything—we all know he should be here with us," Larkin said. "He should be with us. We love him, and I like that we continue to think about him, and I wouldn't imagine it any other way."

Johnny recorded 43 points in 40 games for Team USA at the IIHF World Championships, becoming the all-time leading scorer in program history. USA Hockey confirmed to the Gaudreau family that Johnny would have been selected to the Olympic roster based on his elite international performance.

This would have been his first Olympic opportunity after NHL players missed the 2018 and 2022 Games. Johnny trained relentlessly during his final summer to earn his spot on the Milano Cortina 2026 roster.

Team USA carries extra motivation into the gold medal game as they play for their fallen teammate. The Americans seek their first Olympic gold since the Miracle on Ice at Lake Placid in 1980.

Zach Werenski was Johnny's Columbus Blue Jackets teammate and remains close with the Gaudreau family. The defenseman emphasized the team's determination to make them proud.

"It's great having them here, and it's super special," Werenski said after Friday's semifinal. "We're happy that we made it to the gold-medal game so they can watch that and be a part of it. It's on us to make them proud."

USA faces Canada with the game currently tied 1-1 as Johnny Jr. celebrates his second birthday, watching Team USA honor his father's legacy.
