NHL legend Henrik Lundqvist reflects on his Olympic legacy, analyzes goaltending situation and medal prediction

NHL icon Henrik Lundqvist has returned to Italy nearly two decades after helping Sweden win the Olympic gold at the 2006 Turin Games, as the world ice hockey team assembled at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The legend has recently reflected on his illustrious career and shared how the Olympic experience has shaped his career.

Regarding the icon’s background, Henrik Lundqvist is a former Swedish professional ice hockey goaltender, best known for his 15-season career with the New York Rangers in the NHL. He is a proud winner of the Vezina Trophy in 20212. As per reports, before winning the Vezina Trophy in 2012, he was nominated in each of his first three seasons and remains the only goaltender in NHL history to record eleven 30-win seasons in his first twelve seasons. He is one of the celebrated veteran players who holds the record for the most wins by a European-born goaltender in the NHL.

As the men's ice hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina has started with full pomp and glory, Swedish hockey legend Henrik Lundqvist has reportedly offered his expert analysis on the state of goaltending and which nation could rise to the podium at the world's biggest sporting event.

Lundqvist, a former Olympic gold medallist and one of Sweden's most iconic goaltenders, returns to Olympic ice not as a competitor but as a commentator and analyst, bringing his rich NHL experience gained during his Olympic experience at the 2006 Turin Olympics.


Speaking about his Milano Cortina experience so far, the veteran legend stated, "It's do or die, especially in the playoff rounds, you only play one game — it's not best-of-seven.” He also admitted that the Olympic pressure is much tougher for goalies than what they’re used to in the NHL playoffs. "To play in the Olympics as a goalie is kind of like playing multiple game sevens. You don't have an opportunity to redeem yourself — it's this day, this game, and that's it, Henry Lundqvist stated.

"So you need to make sure you optimise your performance every night you play. And that puts, obviously, a little extra pressure on you as a goalie on the team. As soon as the playoffs start, one game, and there's something very exciting about that,” the former NHL player added.

The icon also said that goalies are the biggest factor because the Olympic games are single-elimination, as there are no second chances like in NHL series, so one hot goalie can carry a team to gold. Besides, for his home country, Lundqvist stressed focusing more on the power-play shooters and strong team coordination to beat the favorites like Team Canada or Team USA.
