NHL trade deadline day leaves fans amazed as star players like Steven Stamkos, Sergei Bobrovsky fail to get traded

In a surprising turn of events, the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline Day saw fewer fireworks than expected, as several star players were surprisingly left untouched as teams across the league chose caution over making a big splash in the market. In a year where the NHL usually witnesses a lot of activity on Trade Deadline Day, as many as 20 trades were made this year, which is the lowest in the last five years, including the pandemic-hit 2021 campaign.
The list of star players who were expected to be traded but were surprisingly left untouched is impressive. This list includes a goalie like Sergei Bobrovsky, as well as defensemen like Colton Parayko and Rasmus Ristolainen, and forwards like Vincent Trocheck, Robert Thomas, and Steven Stamkos.

New CBA rules, no-trade clauses, and parity in NHL contributed to lackluster trade deadline

There were a number of reasons for this quieter market, which started with changes in the NHL's collective bargaining agreement. Under the new terms of the CBA, teams can no longer use a third club to retain salary in the same deal, which is called "double retention."
There is another issue that has made it more difficult for teams to make deals, which is related to salary cap compliance for the playoffs. In previous years, teams like the Lightning and Panthers took advantage of having no salary cap for the playoffs, which meant that players on long-term injured reserve were eligible to play when the playoffs started. The players were also instrumental in preventing deals from being made. Veteran players with no-trade clauses have exercised their contractual rights. Parayko, for example, would not go from his current team, the St. Louis Blues, to the Buffalo Sabres.
Finally, the parity of teams within the league also played a part in limiting the number of trades. For example, as of the deadline, only 10 of the 32 teams in the league are out of playoff contention, thus limiting the number of teams that are sellers.
Mathieu Darche, a forward for the New York Islanders, stated that there are still teams that feel that they have a shot at making the playoffs, thus limiting the number of players that are put out on the market.
Moreover, with the salary cap expected to continue rising over the next few years, teams are choosing to sign their core players as opposed to letting them go out into the market.
At the end of the day, the NHL trade deadline was more about teams being strategic as opposed to making any big deals, even if that meant that some of the biggest names didn’t change uniforms.
