Nick Schmaltz Signs Eight-Year Extension, Cementing His Future With Utah Mammoth
The Utah Mammoth wasn't done making moves after the trade deadline. Having already added puck-moving defender MacKenzie Weegar, the organization turned its attention inward, focusing on keeping the pieces it already had in place. On Tuesday, they made that priority official.
Utah announced an eight-year contract extension with top center Nick Schmaltz, a deal worth $64 million total and carrying an average annual value of $8 million. It's the kind of commitment that signals exactly where this franchise believes it's headed and who they want leading the charge when they get there.
Schmaltz didn't need much convincing. The veteran centerman made it clear that Utah was never a question mark for him when it came time to talk about his future. "There was never a doubt that Utah is where I want to play the rest of my career," he said after finalizing the deal.
Schmaltz pointed to the core around him as a big part of that decision, saying the group assembled in Utah is capable of doing "some special things together." He also had direct words for the ownership, expressing gratitude to Governor Ryan Smith and Ashley Smith "for wanting me to be a part of the group that will one day bring a Stanley Cup to Utah."
Schmaltz's extension fits a clear pattern general manager Bill Armstrong has been establishing since the franchise relocated from Arizona. The Mammoth have already locked up homegrown talents like Logan Cooley, Dylan Guenther, and goalie Karel Vejmelka.
They were also able to secure a long-term deal with top defender Mikhail Sergachev last season. Schmaltz is the latest piece clicked into place. Originally drafted by the Blackhawks in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft, Schmaltz was traded to Arizona in 2018 and gradually became the backbone of the team's top line.
He has reached the 20-goal and 55-point marks in five straight seasons, posting 24 goals and 59 points in 65 games this year alone. Ryan Smith captured the broader meaning of the signing plainly. "Utah is becoming a true destination in the NHL," he said.
He continued, “Nick's long-term commitment reflects the excitement around what we're building here." The Mammoth is building something real, and Schmaltz will be at the center of it for the next eight years.
