Quinn Hughes illness update: Minnesota Wild star defenseman’s availability in doubt for playoff opener against Dallas Stars
Quinn Hughes' health status has become a serious concern for the Minnesota Wild ahead of the NHL playoffs after the star defenseman missed practice due to illness, casting doubt over his availability for Game 1. Reports suggest that Hughes has been absent from multiple practices; however, his team is expecting him to travel. His condition remains day-to-day, leaving uncertainty around whether he will be available for the opening game.
Hughes is considered a key player on the Wild team, and his contribution will be valuable in the playoffs due to his excellent performance and playmaking skills. Hughes’ 76 points in 74 games ranked fifth among NHL defensemen, and his 69 assists ranked second. He led the league with an average ice time per game of 27:44, more than a minute over Zach Werenski, who finished second.
Minnesota Star would be facing the Dallas Stars in the first round for more than a week, but Quinn Hughes’ illness has raised serious concerns for Game 1, as it has disrupted preparations for the playoffs.
According to The Athletic, the star defenseman was expected to be on the team’s charter flight to Dallas. However, Hughes did not fly to Dallas with the team. Instead, he is expected to fly to Dallas on Friday afternoon so he can play Game 1 Saturday evening against the Dallas Stars.
Meanwhile, head coach John Hynes acknowledged the situation, noting that Hughes’ participation will depend on how he recovers in the coming days. His absence, even if temporary, could significantly impact the Wild’s defensive structure and transition game heading into a high-stakes playoff matchup.
He also stated, “I think mentally and physically, this little break is probably really good, even though he’s under the weather and not feeling well. But I just think, mentally, sometimes just getting away from it is good, but our expectation is he’ll be ready to go (Saturday).”
As for his performance, in this season, Hughes scored five goals and 53 points in 48 games for the Wild. His 48 assists were also a single-season team record for defensemen. He reached 50 points in his 43rd game, becoming the fastest player to reach the 50-point mark in franchise history. His presence is indeed very important for the Minnesota Wild to advance further towards the playoffs.
Apart from this, rookie Jesper Wallstedt is expected to make his playoff debut over struggling veteran Filip Gustavsson in Game 1, and defenseman Zach Bogosian is expected to return from a lower-body injury for the game.
