CLAIMAmidst Cyclones Tauktae and
Yaas wreaking havoc across India’s western and eastern coast respectively, a video is being shared on social media platform Facebook with the claim that it shows visuals of a massive cyclone in
Kerala. The claim insinuates that the cyclone captured in the video is a recent one.
The 30-second-long viral clip shows visuals of a massive wind blowing away tanks and a mini tempo.
Facebook user Dachhan Marwah
posted the video on May 21, 2021, captioning it as ‘Cyclone in kerala’.
Many other users shared the video with similar claims.
TRUTHThe video is from Dhule,
Maharashtra and it was made in the year 2019 when Cyclone Vayu had caused substantial damage across India’s western states. It has got nothing to do with recent cyclones or Kerala.
VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGYUsing Google Chrome’s InVID toolkit extension, we broke the video into keyframes and then ran reverse-image search on them.
It led us to a video posted by Amar Ujala on June 15, 2019 on Facebook. This video turned out to be a longer version of the viral video above. From 0:32 in the video, one can see the same visuals as seen in the viral video above.
Amar Ujala
identified the place shown in the video as Dhule, Maharashtra and stated that Cyclone Vayu was responsible for massive winds in the city.
However, it must be noted that Kerala did bear the brunt of
Cyclone Tauktae last week as the southern state suffered 10 fatalities.
