CLAIMA disturbing video is getting circulated on instant messaging platform WhatsApp with a claim that mother of young Dalit woman, who was allegedly gangraped and murdered in
Uttar Pradesh's (UP) Hathras, was mercilessly kicked by a police official.
In the video, one can see a woman begging with folded hands when a cop suddenly kicks her.
The video-message is being shared in Malayalam language.
Using Google Translate, we translated the text in the message, according to which, Hathras victim's family was taken into custody by police before her cremation and when the mother of the victim protested this move and pleaded with authorities to let her see her daughter for the one last time, she was brutally thrashed by cops.
We found the video was being shared on Facebook with similar claims in English.
TRUTHThe video has got nothing to do with Hathras or the victim's family. It is from UP's
Hamirpur.
VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGYUsing InVID Google Chrome extension, we broke the video into key-frames and then ran reverse-image search on them via different search engines.
In the results, we found an 8-day-old
report published on Hindi news portal Dainik Bhaskar. The report carried the same video as above. As per the details in the report, the video is from Hamirpur and six months old.
In Hamirpur, a woman from Ambedkarnagar locality, who owns a vegetable shop was forbidden to open it at the time of lockdown. But she allegedly opened it secretly. This led to her being taken into police custody by a cop named Shyam Pratap Patel. The woman begged for mercy inside the police station, when she was kicked by Patel.
VERDICTTimes Fact Check has found that an old video from UP’s Hamirpur is being shared with a false claim that Hathras victim’s mother was brutally kicked by a cop.
