Gaddam Prasad Kumar, a senior Congress functionary, is set to become the first dalit speaker of the Telangana legislative assembly. His election as speaker is almost unanimous, with support from the BRS, AIMIM, and CPI. The BJP legislators did not participate in the nomination filing. Prasad Kumar, a former minister in the Congress government, will be the third speaker of the Telangana assembly. The last SC community MLA to occupy the Speaker's chair was K Pratibha Bharathi in united Andhra Pradesh, almost 20 years ago.

The Telangana High Court has quashed a criminal case against Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, granting him relief. The case was filed by Vikarabad police for allegedly conducting a hunger strike without permission during the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. Prasad Kumar contended the allegations were false and did not constitute an offence.

The Supreme Court has closed petitions seeking disqualification of 10 Telangana MLAs accused of defecting to Congress. The Speaker has cleared them, finding insufficient evidence of defection. While the court acknowledged the Speaker's decision, it ordered the Speaker's office to provide petitioners with the full order and related materials within specified timelines.

Eight BJP MLAs in Telangana took oath under new speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar after refusing to do so under pro tem speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi.
