Gorakhpur is a city on the banks of River Rapti in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. With a population of more than 673,446, the city is home to the popular Gorakhnath Math, a Gorakshanath temple. The current chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, is a Member of Parliament from the Gorakhpur constituency.

In August 2017, the city of Gorakhpur was in news because of the deaths of dozens of children and others at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital in Gorakhpur. The deaths were caused by shortage of oxygen supply.

The deaths in Gorakhpur hospital highlighted the challenges faced in India’s underfunded public health system, where successive governments have failed to address the acute shortage of staff and clinics. The problems are compounded by cases of shoddy medical treatment in the city.
