Less than two years after the Karvy demat scam came to light, Karvy Group chairman C Parthasarathy was finally arrested in Hyderabad on Thursday on charges of defaulting on a bank loan.

Karvy Group chairman C Parthasarathy is no stranger to controversy. Parthasarathy, who is one of the five founders of Karvy Group, has weathered many a scam including the infamous Roopal Panchal IPO (initial public offering) scam where markets regulator Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi) found irregularities in 21 IPOs between 2003 and 2005.

Two years after the Karvy Stock Broking Limited (KSBL) scam came to light, hundreds of investors are still waiting to get their hard-earned money back.

CBI is now confident that it will be able to crack the scam that rocked the commercial sector, the official said.

Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued an order freezing shares worth Rs 700 crore of accused in karvy scam under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The estimated value of the shares, Rs 700 crore, was arrived as per the valuation report. Incidentally, the order was issued on Friday, but came to light on Saturday.

Amitabh Chaturvedi, a veteran of the banking & financial services industry who was brought in to steady the ship at scam-hit Karvy Group as its CEO for financial services operations, has put in his papers. Chaturvedi had joined the Hyderabad-headquartered business house in December 2019. He resigned from his executive role in January this year and is currently on the boards of three of the Karvy group companies as non-executive director.

Securities Appellate Tribunal stayed a Sebi order banning domestic brokerage firm Karvy Stock Broking Ltd (KSBL) from acting as a broker for three months.
