A special delegation from the Vietnamese embassy in New Delhi on Saturday visited 16 sailors on board the vessel MV Bien Nam, stranded outside the Chennai port.

Tuesday marked the 43rd day of their detention, as the district administration and DG Shipping passed the buck on who is responsible for the decision to detain the sailors.

Fifteen out of 22 sailors, who were recently detained by the Kanyakumari district administration, have got permission to go back to their native countries.

About 22 foreign nationals from Turkey, Georgia and Azarbaijan, who were working in merchant ship MV Mirach that sunk off the coast of Kanyakumari, are in detention in Nagercoil. The crew abandoned the ship that hit a rock and sank on April 1. Police have seized the passports and travel documents of the sailors.

Following a notice from the Madurai bench of the Madras high court to the Kanyakumari district collector in connection with the alleged illegal detention of eight foreign sailors, the district administration has replied that the seafarers were not held captive. However, the district police told TOI that they had confiscated the sailors' passports, making it impossible for them to leave the country.
