Hangout at the historical city square – Located in the heart of the old town, Marienplatz is a central city square in Munich. The square has been holding markets and tournaments since the medieval times. The square received its name in 1638 after the erection of St Mary’s Column at the centre of the square. The column is adorned with a golden statue of a Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon depicted as Queen of Heaven. The square is flanked by some of the well known landmarks including the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall); Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall); Rathaus-Glockenspiel; and Fischbrunnen (Fish Fountain). Built in 1867, the 79 m high tower of the New Town Hall dominates the Marienplatz. Every day at 11, 12 and 17 o'clock, you can witness a show at the Glockenspiel, which lasts for about 15 minutes. The by-lanes around Marienplatz are lined with shops and restaurants. The lively square is the heart of Munich, abuzz with tourists, and as well as locals. Spend an afternoon walking around the old square; you will be amazed and annoyed at the same time looking at the popularity of the selfie sticks!
