Bird’s eye view of Munich from Alter Peter – Originally built in 1180, the Saint Peter’s Church is the oldest parish church in the city. After the destruction of the original church in fire, a new church was built in 1368 in Romanesque Gothic style. The church portrays many architectural styles blending seamlessly, indicating various reconstruction efforts during the last eight hundred years. The church was completely destroyed in WWII and was rebuilt using the original floor plans of 14th century. The ornate interior of church is dominated by gilded High Altar holding a figure of Saint Peter by Erasmus Grasser, along with the vivid ceiling fresco designed by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. These famous German artists were renowned for their church frescos, which gave competition to the renaissance artists from France and Italy. The viewing platform on the top of the 91 m tall tower is a highlight of the visit to Saint Peter’s Church. Climbing 299 steps will reward you with stunning panorama of the historic city centre. On a clear day you can spot the Alps in the distance.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
