Slovak National Theater is a beautiful building that stands in the Old Town area of Bratislava at one end of a market square known as Hviezdoslav Square. This building, showcasing neo-renaissance style architecture, was built in late 19th century when the city was under Austro-Hungarian rule. Architects Fellner & Helmer, known for designing theater buildings around Europe designed this Slovak National Theater as well. This building was initially known as the City Theater and got its current name in 1920. Displaying impressive fresco interiors, the theater can seat up to 1000 people. The very fact that a national theater is placed on a tourist map tells you the importance of music, theater and performing arts in Slovak life. As a tourist you can admire the building while walking around the old town area. A new building of Slovak National Theater has been set up close to Danube, and we were told it is the same place where a 18th century classical style theater existed once upon a time. You have to give it to Europe for re-constructing heritage like no one else.
