Almost midway down the Royal Route, and completely dominating it, is the gargantuan Town Hall with an equally towering watchtower with 37 bells and topped by a gilded statue of King Sigismund Augustus. Though an original Gothic structure existed here, it was rebuilt in the mid 16th century in Renaissance style. It played host to Polish monarchs like Alexander I and Sigismund I, and was the seat of city authorities, but was eventually turned into Gdansk History Museum. Inside, the Great Council Hall is a whirlwind of colours and gorgeous interiors going back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
