The year 2022 has been quite eventful for Bengali TV industry. It witnessed special appearances of a number of Bollywood stars including Madhuri Dixit, Janhvi Kapoor, Suniel Shetty making special appearances on TV shows, controversial moments and tragic deaths. Singer Rupankar Bagchi got mired into a big controversy followed by a backlash from netizens for his remarks on singer KK hours prior to the latter’s sudden demise. Krishnakumar Kunnath was in the city for a two-day concert and the massive response from the audience apparently left Rupankar a bit ‘upset’. Rupankar poured his heart out in a Facebook LIVE video hours prior to KK’s sudden demise. In his video, which was later deleted, he compared the talents in Bengal and questioned why the stage shows by other artists don’t see such response. He went onto make some other comments including ‘Who is KK man’. Rupankar’s comment, followed by KK’s demise resulted in a nation-wide uproar. While netizens, criticised Rupankar, Tollywood celebs, including Rupankar’s peers from music fraternity (including a few whose names Rupankar had mentioned in the video) took a divided stand. Some supported Rupankar while a few criticised him. Reportedly, his family also received threats because of which, he had to seek help from police. Later, Rupankar accompanied by his wife had to hold a press conference where he expressed his grief towards KK’s family. This controversy did cost Rupankar’s career causing cancellation of a few projects. Interestingly, after this controversial episode, Rupnkar was offered Bigg Boss which he turned down. In a shocking turn of events, actress Pallavi Dey was found dead in her Garfa flat under mysterious circumstances on May 15. Her family blamed Pallavi’s live-in partner Sagnik for the incident. He was arrested by the police later. He pleaded to be innocent but Pallavi's family made some shocking allegations including Sagnik’s relationship with another girl and his extravagant lifestyle for which the late actress used to pay. Soon after Pallavi’s death, the news of a few similar incidents left everyone shocked. First Bidisha De Majumder’s lifeless body was recovered from her house hanging from the ceiling. According to police, she reportedly died by suicide. Then, model-actress Manjusha Neogi’s body was found at her parents’ place in Patuli just a few days after Bidisha’s death. In yet another incident, 19-year-old make-up artist Saraswati Das, a resident of Kasba, was found hanging at her place. The back-to-back incidents of alleged suicides triggered an alarm and left medical health experts deeply worried. West Bengal Commission of Women, headed by chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay, arranged a workshop attended by mental health experts, Tolly stakeholders focusing on the mental well-being of artists after these incidents. Actress Aindrila Sharma, who won the battle against cancer twice and followed her passion for acting, passed away on November 21. She was rushed to the hospital on November 1 after suffering a stroke, causing brain haemorrhage. Aindrila underwent immediate surgery and was kept on ventilation for 20 days. On beau Sabyasachi Chowdhury’s request to pray for a miracle, fans, Tollywood celebs prayed for Aindrila’s recovery. Singer Arijit Singh too assured all sorts of support to Aindrila’s family. Bengali film and television actor Abhishek Chatterjee’s shocking demise left Tollywood deeply saddened. The 58-year-old actor, who has been a part of many hit movies, attended the shoot of ‘Ismart Jodi’ on March 24, despite ill health. He threw up a few times on the shooting sets. The crew members immediately attended him. But the actor wasn’t ready to go to the hospital and went home. His wife called a doctor and Abhishek was given medical treatment.
