From wanting to become a mother to a daughter to giving birth in the 10th month; Bharti Singh’s heartwarming motherhood revelations

Bharti Singh, in a candid conversation on Debina Bonnerjee's podcast, shared her heartwarming journey to motherhood. From her deep desire to have a daughter to the unique experience of giving birth in the 10th month, Bharti opened up about the joys and challenges she faced. Haarsh and my relationship with Debina and Gurmeet go a long way. They are such a cute couple. There are some couples, who don’t bother anyone and they just keep doing their own things. Main Debina ka jhhootha khaake jaungi ya paani peeke jaungi because I want a baby girl next. Aur inhone saari girls le li.

I have seen women around me working during their pregnancy. I have seen the lesser priviledged, labour class women working during their pregnancy. Being pregnant is a blessing. I have seen women crying for not being able to get pregnant. When in 4 years I didn’t get pregnant, I kept thinking if I’ll be able to get pregnant. The day we decided, I got pregnant in a week. I decided main kissi ko tang nhi karungi if I get pregnant. My mother didn’t disturb anyone when I was born. There was just one ‘dai’ to cut the umbilical cord. She charged Rs 60. I was unwanted child. They had 2 kids already and didn’t want a third. She tried several ways to get it terminated but I had to be on this planet.

Doctor told me that I was working very much so I should keep my bag ready in the 7th month. You won’t believe. I was shooting for Khatra Khatra Khatra and I wanted to complete the shoot. I wanted money. Money is important and I was getting good money there. So I didn’t want that I deliver in the 7th month. I would keep talking to my baby to wait. I didn’t want to lose what we were getting. Both Haarsh and I were working hard and we have no Godfathers. We have built everything together. I had manifested a healthy baby and a healthy me and till 9th month I had this belief. In 9 and half months, the show was about to end and in 10th month he arrived. The kid, who doesn’t listen to me now, heard me back then.

I sent him to Montessori school. I saw him and was very happy to see how things were done. Though I can teach him same things at home but seeing him learn things with other kids, I feel very good. I am loving my mommy days. No matter how tired I am, seeing him gives me a new lease of energy.

My husband, Haarsh is very health conscious. He goes to gym. I was not. But I would eat healthy. During lockdown, when the house helps left and I had to do my own work, I realised my body couldn’t do household chores. That was the time I realised that I am not fit. If you see what I eat, you’ll be shocked. I eat everything but I don’t eat beyond 7pm.

I was 5kg when I was born. Main bachpan se moti hu. Mujhe kabhi bura nahi laga log mujhe moti bolte hai toh. Ab moti hoon toh hoon. Bura lagne se pehle main makeover kar leti hoon. Now it has changed. Now people call me chubby, bubbly. But at the end of day, I am moti. But if you are fat from childhood and healthy, it’s fine. But if you have become fat by not eating then it is not healthy. I wasn’t healthy and during Covid I couldn’t mop my own floor.

Haarsh used to write and I would love to sit with him. I never felt love. He had messaged me on phone ‘I love you’. When I read the message, I felt the entire Amritsar is reading the message along with me. I thought everyone is judging me. I didn’t reply to him for 3 days. But it was beautiful. We felt love. We would go to watch movies and would see other couples kissing, we wouldn’t even hold hands.

After writing ‘I love you’, he proposed to me for marriage after 3-4 days. He wanted to get married and I was shocked. I am so fat and if he stands behind me, he wouldn’t be seen. But he worked on himself because there was a big gap between me as an artist and him as a writer. People would think that he must have married me for money. But Haarsh made himself capable enough to shut everyone. It was my life’s best decision.
