For years, Christmas has given people of many faiths a platform to promote communal harmony. On Christmas Eve (December 24), while churches across Chandigarh geared up to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with carols, prayers, and candle lighting, Santas from the other faiths spread cheer like every year. Rakesh Dipak, who has been visiting the Sector 19 church in the attire of Santa Claus for two years, says: “I feel nice and teaches me more about the Christian traditions.” In Sector 18, the midnight mass was well-attended. For many people of other faiths, it’s an annual tradition to be a part of the prayers. “God is one. I come here to pray for peace,” said college student Nitika Sachdev. Tight security was seen around every Church and the tableau of the Nativity of Christ, complete with the Jesus’ crib, was part of Christmas decoration everywhere. “Diversity in the themes for the tableaux attracted me,” said one of the visitors. While the prayer hall was packed, there was a bigger rush outside.
