Months after Iran was rocked by anti-regime protests, the Iranian authorities said they executed a man they accused of helping fuel nationwide unrest. According to the Iranian media, Abbas Akbari was hanged after the country’s Supreme Court upheld his conviction on charges including moharebeh — or “enmity against God” — destruction of public property, and opening fire on security forces in Isfahan province. Iranian officials described Akbari as a key figure in what they called foreign-backed riots aimed at destabilizing the country. State media also released video footage allegedly showing his involvement in attacks on public property during the protests.
