Iran has taken a defiant stance over control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, declaring that it will not negotiate while the naval situation remains unstable and its coastline is blockaded. Tehran sees the strait — a vital artery for about a fifth of the world’s oil trade — as a central bargaining chip, and recent clashes around the waterway, including ship seizures and gunfire, have threatened to unravel a fragile ceasefire and heighten global energy risks. With tensions spiking and commercial traffic disrupted, Iran’s leadership has insisted that freedom of navigation must be secured without conditions before it will seriously engage in diplomatic talks with the United States.
