The legal battle over the future of the Delhi Gymkhana Club is set to intensify after permanent members and employees decided to challenge the Centre’s eviction order in the Delhi High Court. The Land and Development Office (L&DO), under the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, had directed the club to vacate its 27.3-acre Safdarjung Road premises by June 5 after terminating its lease, citing national security and defence infrastructure needs.Club members have reportedly engaged senior advocate and Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi to represent them, while a separate petition is also being planned by the club’s nearly 600 employees. Members have questioned the government’s claim that the area poses security concerns, arguing that the club has coexisted with high-security establishments for decades without incident. The government-appointed General Committee has sought clarity from authorities on issues including possible relocation, protection of employees, and compensation for investments made in club infrastructure. Employees and members have expressed fears over loss of livelihood, disruption of club operations, and the future of one of Delhi’s oldest elite institutions. The controversy has triggered reactions from several public figures, including former Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, who termed the move “tragic and unfortunate” and described the club as part of Delhi’s sporting and institutional heritage. Historians and former diplomats have also criticised the decision, saying the Delhi Gymkhana Club represents an important part of the capital’s social and cultural history.
