In 2022-23, only 205 families of hit-and-run victims sought compensation, with a total of Rs 1.8 crore dispersed in just 95 cases, as per government data. The remaining 110 claims are pending, reflecting a lack of awareness about the application process. Despite the government's compensation increase to Rs 2 lakh for fatalities and Rs 50,000 for severe injuries, approximately 25,000 deaths and 43,000 injuries occur in hit-and-run incidents annually across the country. In 2019, the government augmented compensation by eight and four times for deaths and severe injuries, respectively, and established the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund to facilitate the higher payouts. The fund became operational in April 2022, replacing the earlier solatium fund. The report anticipates a rise in claims in the coming years, highlighting the importance of educating the public about the compensation process.
