The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game Season 2 Review : A compelling murder mystery to sink into

Story: In its second edition, the series sees journalist Miren Rojo (Milena Smit) solving a new case that involves the murder of a girl from an elite school. Could it be related to the disappearance of another girl from the same school a few years back?

Review: 'The Snow Girl Season 2 - Soul Game' opens with Miren on a book tour, basking in the success of her new book, based on her last case (Snow Girl Season 1). Once back at work, she is given a new investigative story to track and a new team-mate, Jaime (Miki Esparbe) to work alongside. While Miren dives right into her assignment, to uncover the truth behind the gruesome murder of a young girl, Alison, she also receives a mysterious package. It contains an invitation for her to play The Soul Game and has a dimly lit photo of Laura Valdivia, a girl who went missing a few years back.

Miren is convinced that Alison's murder and Laura's disappearance are connected, as they were both from the same school and deeply religious. And that the Soul game, which gives 'tests' to its players to purify their soul, has something to do with it. But Jaime prefers a more cautious approach. Miren tries to befriend Laura's brother, Nacho (Hugo Welzel) to unearth more information about Laura, around the time she disappeared. While Jaime tries to locate Laura's ex-boyfriend, Tomas (Ignacio Montes). While Jaime meets with unexpected roadblocks, Miren finds herself getting more and more sucked into the Soul game endangering her life.

The series follows two tracks of investigation, one of the journalists and the other of detective Belen Millan (Aixa Villagran).

The Snow Girl Season 2 is based on Javier Castillo's novel, The Soul Game, a sequel to his 2021 novel, on which Season 1 was based.
The visual language of the series blends in the urban landscape of Málaga, seamlessly with the intense storyline. An eerie background score adds to the mood as the narrative follows two mysteries simultaneously and also delves into Mirin's traumatic past.

With just six episodes in the season, the story sticks to the main plot unraveling new twists and turns, even as it digs into the trappings of dogma and blind faith.

Milena Smit powers through with a strong yet vulnerable performance, reminding us why season one captivated its audience instantly. Although in terms of its overall plot season 2 doesn't totally live up to the hype that season 1 created.

That said, the series does manage to remain compelling owing to its tight and gripping storytelling and ends with the hint of another season in the offing.
