JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has come under intense pressure to launch a largescale operation in the Gaza Strip, a move that can derail efforts to kickstart stalled Middle East peace process. "The hourglass has long since run out, a red line has been crossed," Deputy Prime Minister, Eli Yishai, said. "A military operation in Gaza was unavoidable", he stressed.
Yishai, a staunch believer that Qassams are a result of the Israeli disengagement (evacuation) from Gaza, also said Jerusalem should refrain from participating in the US-led planned peace summit in November.
"This is not the time for empty gestures and to attend an international conference. I want a summit that will result in peace, not war," the deputy Prime Minister said. Opposition Likud party chairman, lawmaker Gideon Sa'ar, slammed Olmert for his announcement yesterday to consider goodwill gestures towards Palestinians ahead of Ramzan. "Olmert's government, which continues to release terrorists from prison and promise Abbas new concessions and withdrawals, refuses to face reality and deal with a Hamas nation in Gaza," Sa'ar said. "A military operation, with the inclusion of ground forces, is unavoidable in sealing with the surge in rocket fire against Israel and the strengthening of Hamas in Gaza primarily due to the unfiltered flow of arms into the Strip", he said.
