US-Israel-Iran War News Highlights: Eight killed as Israel attacks south Lebanon despite ceasefire

The Iran war situation remains highly tense, with escalating political warnings, ongoing diplomacy, and continued regional violence.

US Senator Marco Rubio warned that Iran is “sprinting towards” a nuclear weapon and said there is “no doubt” the country would eventually seek one if its current leadership remains in power. He stressed that any agreement must prevent Iran from moving toward nuclear capability, accusing Tehran of potentially trying to “buy time” through negotiations.

US President Donald Trump has signalled skepticism toward Iran’s latest proposal, reportedly rejecting a plan that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz while postponing nuclear talks. At the same time, US lawmakers are pushing War Powers resolutions to limit presidential military action in Iran, arguing that Congress must authorize further escalation.

European leaders are also voicing concern. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the United States is “being humiliated” by Iran and warned there is “no exit strategy” for the conflict. He added that the US “went into this war without any strategy” and suggested Iranian negotiators were either “very skilfully negotiating — or simply very skilfully not negotiating,” highlighting growing frustration in Europe over the war’s economic and geopolitical fallout.

Diplomatic channels remain active but fragile. Iran has proposed via intermediaries—including Pakistan—a temporary deal involving reopening the Strait of Hormuz while deferring nuclear negotiations. Iran’s UN envoy defended its position, accusing the US and Israel of “waging war of aggression” and justifying measures to secure maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, regional violence continues. Hezbollah has carried out drone attacks in southern Lebanon, wounding Israeli soldiers, while Israeli forces have responded with airstrikes and interceptions of aerial targets. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has vowed Israel “will not remain” on Lebanese land and demanded full withdrawal, prisoner release, and reconstruction.

Overall, the conflict remains at a critical point, with no clear diplomatic breakthrough, continued military exchanges, and widening international concern over regional stability and energy security.

Israel Iran War: Israel army chief warns soldiers against 'looting'
Israel's military chief of staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir issued a sharp warning to troops about looting on Monday, and said using social media to spread "questionable" messages was crossing "a red line".

"The phenomenon of looting, if it exists, is disgraceful and risks tarnishing the IDF as a whole. If such incidents occurred, we will investigate them," he said in a statement, using the acronym for the Israeli army.

His remarks came after Israel's left-leaning Haaretz newspaper reported that troops in south Lebanon had been looting significant amounts of civilian property, citing testimonies from troops and commanders in the field.

Footage has also emerged on social media of Israeli soldiers filming each other joking around as they damaged property inside people's homes in what appeared to be south Lebanon.

Another image on social media showed a soldier using a sledgehammer to smash a figure of Jesus that had fallen off a cross in southern Lebanon.

Israel Iran War: Trump dicsusses Iran's proposal with national security team
US President Donald Trump met with his top security advisors Monday to discuss an Iranian proposal that would reportedly re-open the Strait of Hormuz as broader negotiations over the war continue, the White House said.

When asked about the reported plan -- which would see both Iran and the United States lift their blockades ahead of further talks on the thorny issue of Tehran's nuclear program -- spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told a White House briefing that "the proposal was being discussed."

"Only because it's been reported, I will confirm the president has met with his national security team this morning," she said, refusing to say if Trump would accept the proposal.

US Iran War: 'Iran can't decide who uses Strait of Hormuz,' says Marco Rubio on Tehran's purported fresh proposal
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says a purported offer from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under strict conditions is not acceptable to the United States or others.

Speaking in a Monday interview with Fox News, Rubio said Iran has a different view of the strategic waterway than most of the rest of the world.

“What they mean by opening the straits is, yes, the straits are open, as long as you coordinate with Iran, get our permission, or we'll blow you up and you pay us,” he said.

“That's not opening the straits. Those are international waterways. They cannot normalise, nor can we tolerate them trying to normalise, a system in which the Iranians decide who gets to use the waterways," Rubio said.

Iran war news: Pakistan mediating between US and Iran 'out of necessity,' report says
Pakistan is mediating between Iran and the US out of necessity. For Pakistan, a destabilised Iran increases space for militants on the western flank and tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran risk triggering pact obligations, a report has stated.

By mediating between the US and Iran, Pakistan has gained visibility. However, diplomatic access does not lead to an agreement and leverage does not imply a cash flow. Until each gets paid, packaged and converted, Pakistan is seen but is not being paid, according to an opinion piece in Pakistan's leading daily The News International.

"Is Pakistan a pillar or a bridge? A bridge connects others. A pillar anchors value. A bridge carries traffic. A pillar carries weight. A bridge facilitates passage. A pillar sets terms. A bridge is used by others. A pillar is paid for by others. Yes, Pakistan has become a repeat-use mediator. Yes, Pakistan has secured seats at select negotiation tables. But Pakistan remains balance-sheet dependent. Ground reality: Pakistan has no monetisation framework," Farrukh Saleem wrote in an opinion piece in The News International.

"Pakistan has no pricing mechanism. And Pakistan has no contract pipeline. Remember, Pakistan is not mediating out of choice. Pakistan is mediating out of necessity. For Pakistan, a destabilised Iran expands space for militants across our western flank. For Pakistan, a Saudi-Iran escalation risks triggering treaty obligations. For Pakistan, a regional war imports sectarian stress into domestic politics. For Pakistan, mediation is risk containment," the author further stated.

Iran war news: Iran divisions' biggest hurdle in talks, says Rubio
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Monday said internal divisions within Iran’s leadership remain the biggest obstacle to any agreement with Washington, even as he indicated Tehran may be under growing pressure to strike a deal.

In an interview with Fox News’ Trey Yingst on Monday, Rubio described Iran’s power structure as deeply fragmented, complicating negotiations and limiting what its officials can commit to at the table.

“Other than the fact that the country is run by radical Shia clerics, that’s a pretty big impediment. The other is that they’re deeply fractured internally, and I think that’s always been the case, but I think it’s far more pronounced now,” Rubio said.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araqchi said on Monday that Tehran is examining US President Donald Trump’s request for negotiations, Reuters reported, quoting a post on his Telegram account.

Speaking to reporters in Russia, Araqchi said Trump was seeking talks because the United States had “not achieved any of its objectives.”

Iran war news: UAE slams Gulf allies as 'weak' on Iran
A senior United Arab Emirates official on Monday criticised the country's Gulf allies over their response to Iranian retaliatory attacks in the region following the Israeli-US strikes that launched the Middle East war.

Presidential advisor Anwar Gargash said the Gulf states had supported each other logistically in the crisis but he lambasted their political and military response.

"The GCC's stance was the weakest historically, considering the nature of the attack and the threat it posed to everyone," Gargash said, referring to the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council.

Gargash said he "expected such a weak stance from the Arab League", the 22-member organisation of Middle East and North African nations based in Cairo.

"But I don't expect it from the GCC, and I am surprised by it," he told a conference in Dubai.

Tehran fired hundreds of missiles and drones at the GCC nations -- Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE -- after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28.

Iran Israel war: Lebanese President Aoun backs ceasefire; rejects ‘foreign-driven wars’ amid Israel tensions
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has reiterated that a ceasefire remains the essential first step for any negotiations with Israel, stating that Beirut has conveyed this position to the United States during ambassador-level talks held on April 14 and 23.

In a post on X, Aoun pointed to a US State Department statement affirming that Israel would halt offensive military operations against Lebanese targets across land, sea, and air. He stressed that this reflects Lebanon’s official stance, dismissing any contrary claims as not binding.

Pushing back against criticism over potential negotiations, Aoun questioned the lack of “national consensus” during past decisions to go to war and urged detractors to wait for outcomes before passing judgment. He also criticised conflicts fought on Lebanese soil for external interests, including those linked to Gaza and Iran, asserting that such wars are unacceptable.

Emphasising accountability, Aoun said his goal is to steer Lebanon towards stability and ultimately end the state of war with Israel, while firmly rejecting any agreement that compromises national dignity.

US Iran war: China slams US sanctions on refinery over Iran oil; vows to defend firms
China strongly opposed the United States’ decision to sanction Hengli Petrochemicals, a refinery based in Dalian, for purchasing Iranian crude oil, calling the move “illegal unilateral sanctions” lacking an international legal basis.

The US announced the measures on Friday, which block the company and entities involved in transporting Iranian oil from accessing the American financial system.

Reacting to the development, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticised Washington for “abusing sanctions and exercising long-arm jurisdiction,” and urged it to stop its “wrong practices.” Emphasising Beijing’s stance, Lin said China would firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its companies. The development comes as China remains the largest buyer of Iranian oil, with several firms engaged in such imports despite US restrictions.

The remarks came from Iranian parliamentarian Ebrahim Rezaei, who criticised Pakistan’s suitability as a neutral intermediary in ongoing regional diplomacy.

US Iran War: US Treasury sanctions Chinese “teapot” refinery and 40 shipping firms and vessels in bid to pressure Iranian oil revenues
The United States has intensified its campaign to disrupt Iran’s primary revenue streams, targeting global networks linked to its oil trade and so-called “shadow fleet”, in what officials described as an “Economic Fury” operation.
The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Friday, April 24, sanctioned China-based independent “teapot” refinery Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refinery Co., Ltd.
According to the US Treasury Department, the refinery is one of Iran’s largest buyers of crude oil and petroleum products, having purchased billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian energy exports.
The Treasury also designated around 40 shipping firms and vessels identified as part of a “shadow fleet”. These vessels, officials said, help facilitate the transport of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products to global markets, providing what Washington described as a financial lifeline to the Iranian regime.

Iran FM Araghchi conveys 'red lines' on nuclear issues, Strait of Hormuz to US via Pakistan
Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has conveyed a list of Tehran’s “red lines” to be passed to the United States during his recent diplomatic visit to Pakistan, according to Iranian state media outlet Fars.

The report said the strategic boundaries specifically cover “nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz”. However, it added that the exchange of messages is “not related to Iran-US negotiations” and is instead aimed at clarifying the regional situation and Tehran’s limits.

No further details of the messages were disclosed. Araghchi is currently in St Petersburg, where he is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. His visit follows consultations in Pakistan and Oman, which Iran described as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement with regional stakeholders.

On arrival in Russia, Araghchi told state media IRNA that discussions in Pakistan had focused on conditions under which “Iran-US talks can resume”.

The development comes as the United States maintains a firm stance on negotiations. US President Donald Trump said Iranian leaders “can call” if they want to engage in talks, while expressing optimism that the conflict could “come to an end very soon”. He also defended his decision to halt a planned visit by US envoys to Pakistan.

Separately, reports by Axios said Iran has submitted a “new proposal” to Washington via Pakistani intermediaries, outlining a framework to “reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war”. According to Axios, the US has received the proposal, though it remains unclear whether Washington is willing to consider it.

Sharing details of his recent diplomatic engagements in St Petersburg, Araghchi referred to his earlier visit to Pakistan, saying Islamabad had played an important mediating role in Iran-US discussions.

“Regarding Pakistan, this country has played an important role in mediating negotiations between Iran and the United States recently, and it was necessary to discuss the latest developments,” he said.

Commenting on the status of talks, he added, “In any case, there have been developments in the negotiation process, and the incorrect approaches and excessive demands of the United States have prevented the previous round of negotiations from achieving its objectives, despite some progress.”

Araghchi further said discussions focused on reviewing past developments and conditions for future engagement. “We reviewed what has happened in the past and discussed how, and under what conditions, negotiations could continue,” he said.

Russia’s foreign ministry confirmed the visit, with officials telling TASS that the Iranian minister would hold talks in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also confirmed that Putin is scheduled to meet Araghchi to discuss the evolving regional situation.

US-Iran War Live: Iran offers ‘new proposal’ via Pakistan to end war, reopen Strait of Hormuz: Report

Iran has put forward a “new proposal” to the United States through Pakistani intermediaries, outlining a potential framework to end the ongoing conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report.

The proposal, described as a “two-stage plan”, aims to de-escalate tensions and restore maritime movement through the key oil transit route. Reports said Tehran is seeking to delay nuclear negotiations until the US lifts its blockade, indicating a phased approach to resolving the crisis.

The development comes amid stalled diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran. US President Donald Trump has maintained that any engagement would require direct outreach from Iran, saying the country could “call” if it wished to negotiate. He has also reiterated that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons.

Momentum for talks appeared to weaken after the US cancelled a planned visit by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad. The move was seen as reflecting dissatisfaction with Tehran’s earlier proposal and has added uncertainty to ongoing mediation efforts.

US-Iran War Live: Iran threatens retaliation over oil infrastructure damage after Trump warning
Iran's vice president Esmail Saghab Esfahani has warned of retaliation if Iran’s oil infrastructure is damaged, following remarks by US President Donald Trump about increasing pressure on Tehran’s energy sector.

“If any part of our infrastructure, including oil wells, is damaged as a result of a blockade, we guarantee that four times that damage will be inflicted on the same infrastructure in countries that support the aggressor,” Saghab wrote on X on Sunday.

“Our math is different; one oil well equals four oil wells,” he warned. The statement came after Trump said in an interview with Fox News that continued pressure on Iran could disrupt its ability to move oil to storage or tankers. He said that if such constraints persist, Iran’s pipelines could reach a critical point within about three days.

US-Iran War Live: 'I hope Iran will be smart, but we'll win anyway,' says Trump
US President Donald Trump has indicated that the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran could be nearing an end, asserting that mounting military and economic pressure has placed Tehran in a weakened position and may push it towards a resolution.

Speaking to Fox News on the evolving situation, Trump said, "I think the big advantage is that we've taken out their navy in its entirety... They have no air force left. They have no navy left...They're in bad shape. I mean, they're really in bad shape. And of course, we've done the blockade, and the blockade's been unbelievably effective, and that means they can't get any more money," he said, pointing to what he described as extensive damage to Iran's military and industrial capabilities.

Trump added that internal divisions within Iran's leadership could further accelerate the path to an outcome. "Their leaders are gone, which is a good thing. They were far more radicalised than the people that we're dealing with now.

The people we're dealing with now, some of them are very reasonable people, and others are not. And they're not getting along. You know, there's a lot of in-fighting as you know. But you know, they don't have anti-aircraft equipment, they don't have radar equipment.

It's all been blown up. Their factories, their missile-making factories have been damaged about 75%, which isn't 100%, so there's danger there," he said, expressing hope that Tehran would take a pragmatic approach moving forward.

Trump further signalled confidence that the situation could conclude in Washington's favour. "I hope they're going to be smart, and if they're not smart, we're going to win anyway," he said, suggesting that an end to the standoff may be approaching.

He reiterated that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon” and said discussions would only proceed under that condition, even as he signalled Pakistan could remain involved in facilitating communication.

Amid stalled direct talks with Washington, Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has intensified regional diplomacy, travelling across Oman, Pakistan and Russia. He held discussions in Muscat on maritime security and regional stability, made a brief transit stop in Islamabad while presenting a framework to end the conflict, and is now set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting is expected to focus on the status of negotiations, ceasefire efforts and broader geopolitical developments, with both Moscow and Tehran continuing to deepen ties under Western sanctions.

At the same time, Tehran has issued a strong warning over its energy infrastructure. Vice president Esmail Saghab Esfahani said any damage to Iran’s oil facilities would trigger retaliation “four times” against countries supporting such actions, underscoring rising risks around the Strait of Hormuz and global energy routes. His remarks followed Trump’s statement that sustained pressure could push Iran’s oil pipelines to a critical point within days.

Backchannel diplomacy continues, with reports that Iran has conveyed a proposal via Pakistan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end hostilities, while deferring nuclear negotiations. However, no second round of direct US-Iran talks has taken place despite a ceasefire that has been in effect for over two weeks.

The broader region remains tense, with ongoing Israeli military activity in Lebanon and internal political developments in Israel adding to uncertainty. With diplomatic efforts, military posturing and economic pressure unfolding simultaneously, the situation remains fluid with no clear resolution in sight.
