ATTARI: To discuss the ways and means to make south Asia a hundred percent literate region in the world, Pakistan's Sindh province's education minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro arrived in India on Friday to participate in the South Asia Literacy Summit being held in Delhi from December 14 to 15.
"We not only want to make South Asia literate but a better educated region," said Khuhro while talking to TOI on Friday.
He informed that the event was being organized by Rotary Club. "Rotary had earlier successfully initiated polio eradication drive and now I am hopeful that literacy mission would again be a successful drive," he said.
According to reports, Rotary International group has announced to set up 100 schools across India to impart quality education to children. Ministers from Nepal are also participating in the summit. A lot of ground work had already been done in ensuring literacy and education in South Asia. Some of the issues which would be discussed in the summit includes adult literacy, functional literacy, government, activists, NGO's etc, participation in the literacy mission besides discussion roll out of school development plan he said.
Khuhro was of the view that now a days there had been incredible advancement in education tools. "We have speaking books, the schools can be opened through mobile phones, but we have to bring awareness among people about these advancements," he said.
There were non formal education campaign as well as formal education ones where new class rooms were added to impart education to more people. "We want to tell world that no one is uneducated in this region," he said. He said emphasis had to be laid on adult education and early child education . "It is our dream to make every people of the region literate and we are on to it," he said.
