US Elections 2024 Live Updates: Democracy was a motivating factor for both Harris and Trump voters, but for very different reasons
Democracy emerged as a crucial concern alongside inflation and immigration in this year's presidential election, with half of all voters citing it as their primary voting motivation. This surpassed other significant issues including inflation, border concerns, abortion rights and free speech, as revealed in AP VoteCast's comprehensive survey of over 120,000 voters across the nation.
Supporters of Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican President-elect Donald Trump viewed democratic concerns from contrasting angles.
Approximately two-thirds of Harris's supporters identified democracy's future as their chief voting consideration, outweighing other significant matters such as economic pressures, abortion rights, free speech, or the prospect of electing the first female president. Harris intensified this message during her campaign's final phase, explicitly labelling Trump as a threat to fundamental American principles and describing him as a fascist.
This position received backing from former Trump administration officials who expressed concerns about his suitability for office. Trump's actions included refusing to accept the peaceful transition of power whilst making false claims about his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Additionally, on Jan. 6, 2021, after telling his supporters to "fight like hell," Trump directed them towards the Capitol. (AP)
