India creates 1 Billion AI images in weeks, says Sam Altman
New Delhi: India has become one of the fastest-growing markets for AI-generated visuals, with users creating more than one billion images using ChatGPT Images 2.0 within weeks of its rollout, according to OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman.Sharing the update on X, Altman said it was “awesome to see” the scale at which Indian users were adopting the new image-generation tool. The feature, introduced by OpenAI in April, offers sharper image quality, stronger instruction-following abilities and improved multilingual text rendering. The surge in usage has been fuelled by social media users experimenting with detailed prompts to generate stylised portraits, animated edits, comic-style illustrations and cinematic collages. One of the biggest trends involves “Mini Me” creations, where small animated versions of users are added into real-life photographs. Fashion-inspired studio portraits, designed to resemble magazine covers, have also become widely popular. Another frequently used prompt focuses on correcting lighting issues in photographs while keeping facial expressions, backgrounds and compositions unchanged.Users are also generating anime-inspired avatars, retro manga panels, underwater portraits and travel-themed scrapbook collages featuring postcards, souvenirs and layered visual effects.
Chibi-style sticker packs with cartoon expressions and captions have emerged as another popular format across messaging apps and Instagram stories.Technology watchers said the attraction lies in the simplicity of the process. Unlike traditional editing software, the tool allows users to create polished visuals using conversational instructions without requiring technical design skills. The updated model has also improved text rendering in Indian languages, addressing a long-standing challenge for AI image systems that often struggled with non-English scripts. The company says the tool can now handle complex layouts, typography and multilingual text more accurately. Many of the prompts currently trending online are highly descriptive, specifying details such as camera framing, jewellery, lighting direction, colour tones, clothing textures and background aesthetics to guide image generation more precisely. The rapid adoption of AI image tools is also reflecting a broader expansion of generative AI usage in India beyond developers and tech professionals. Students, digital creators, small businesses and influencers are increasingly using such tools for content creation, branding and social media storytelling.Industry analysts said the trend points to a wider shift in AI adoption, where image-generation tools are moving from specialised creative communities into mainstream smartphone use. Several of the most popular prompt formats have spread quickly through short-video platforms, online creator communities and messaging groups.
