AHMEDABAD: A man riding on motorbike was crushed to death after being hit head-on by an AMTS bus in Vejalpur area on Saturday morning. Rakesh Solanki, 22, was on his motorbike with friend Mayur Vaghela riding pillion, when the accident occurred near the Jal Tarang police chowky.The front wheel of the bus rammed into the bike, seriously injuring both of them.
They were rushed to VS hospital where Solanki succumbed to his injuries. Vaghela, who suffered some minor injuries, was discharged after treatment.
Irate onlookers pelted stones on the bus, broke its window panes and demanded action against the erring driver who had escaped the scene after fearing public ire. Vejalpur police has filed a complaint are are searching for him. This is not the an isolated case of rash driving by AMTS bus drivers. Statistics show that 53 such accidents occurred in January, 63 in February and 76 in March. The growing number of misha ps caused by speeding buses of AMTS and the state transport corporation have become a matter of concern for city traffic police. Asit Vora, chairman, AMTS, said, “We are aware about the issue and are taking serious steps to rein in the errant bus drivers. We have regular meetings with contractors, drivers and transport authorities on this issue. Drivers are undergoing training programmes at Ahmedabad Management Association for safe driving on city roads.” On July 15, Pragya Jani, 53 was similarly knocked down by a speeding AMTS bus at Sattadhar cross-roads and last month, Sachin Jantani, 15, was run over near Delhi Darwaja. According to police, these accidents occur due to rash and negligent driving.
