Dandiyas may turn into nanchakus
SURAT: With the Navratri festival nearing, classes imparting garba and dodhiya lessons have mushroomed in various areas of the city. Shaking a leg to the tunes of latest Bollywood remixes, girls in the city are gearing up for the nine nights of fun. And, learning self de-fence along with garba, to prevent eve-teasing also happens to be their top priority.
Young women in the age group of 17 to 25 are very keen to learn self-defence techniques like karate, savate, judo, aikido or wing-tsun etc, to prevent any instance of eve-teasing, feels Dhiren Patel, 38, a black belt in karate running his own training institute.

The art of wing-tsun is a must for young girls which gives them an edge over an opponent, says Dhiren, adding that the confidence level of people increases after completion of the course.
Bhavi Shah, 17, because of her introvert nature would suffer unpleasant comments from boys quietly. However, this made her enrol in a self-defence course.
She confides that the course has given her confidence to handle any situation and has literally armed her to tackle any unpleasant experience during Navratri.
Fighting in traditional wear with all its finery may be difficult but not impossible and girls are being taught self-defence even in chania-choli, informs Dolly Parmar, 24, a fitness trainer.
Adding that her self defence training had come of good use when she was confronted by a group of boys teasing the girls in her trekking group at Satpura. Martial arts training has become a necessity in a woman’s life today as one never knows when it may come in handy, says Dolly.

A chartered accountancy student, Divya Patel, 21, feels that in today’s world women are becoming independent in all areas so why should she be dependent on others for personal safety? It is not previous experience that leads young women to learn self-defence, it is a way to ensure their safety during Navratri, says Dipti Patel, 22, an accounts executive.
Learning martial arts is not only meant for self-defence but also increases confidence levels among people and brings about a transformation in their attitude.
