Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A night patrol team of the Markhel police foiled a burglary at Achyare Jewellers, in Hannegaon village, of Nanded district, in the early hours of Saturday. They also arrested one of the accused and recovered gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 7.45 lakh.
The incident occurred between 3am and 3.25am in the main Sarafa market, when a police team on night patrol noticed suspicious activity outside the shop.
Authorities said that, acting on instructions issued by Nanded superintendent of police Abinash Kumar to intensify night patrolling and mandatory QR code scanning till 5am, the team had stopped to scan a QR code near the shop and spotted the shutter partially open and a man conducting a recce.
Sub-inspector Vilas Pawar, who was leading the patrol, immediately took the police vehicle to the spot. "Sensing the seriousness of the situation, we moved in quickly. Two men came running out of the shop carrying stolen jewellery in a white sack, while another was keeping watch," Pawar said.
Police chased the suspects through dark fields and bushes and managed to nab one of them, identified as Sevaksingh Tilpatte, a resident of Umri in Nanded district.
The others managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
Additional inspector Ravi Hundekar said silver jewellery weighing 2.6kg, valued at Rs 7 lakh, Rs 30,790 in cash, and 12 1-gram gold beads worth Rs 15,000 were seized from the arrested accused. "During interrogation, the accused revealed the names of his accomplices. Two special teams have been formed to trace the remaining suspects," Hundekar said.
An FIR was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 305, 331(4), and 3(5). The accused was remanded in three-day police custody, and further investigation is underway.
