Berhampur: A day after some men allegedly assaulted a youth and his girlfriend at Giri Road here, police on Tuesday said they have launched a massive manhunt to nab those involved in the attack.
SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M said multiple teams have been formed and the accused have been identified. Preliminary inquiry suggests prior enmity between the victim and the suspects may have triggered the incident, police said. Police said some criminal cases are pending against the injured youth, Umesh Rath, who is from Gosaninugaon.
According to police, around 9.10 pm on Monday, a group of about four men allegedly waylaid Rath while he was passing through Giri Road with his girlfriend and attacked him with wooden logs. The woman, who tried to intervene, sustained minor injuries. Rath suffered serious injuries and was first taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital and later shifted by his family to a private hospital in Visakhapatnam.
Senior officers, including the SP, visited the spot and the hospital. A case has been registered at Berhampur Town police station and efforts are on to arrest the accused. A video of the assault, which occurred in full public view, has since gone viral on social media, triggering widespread condemnation.
