Charanjit Singh Channi was on Monday sworn in as chief minister of Punjab, becoming the first dalit to hold the top post in the state. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni were also sworn in. They will be designated as deputy chief ministers. Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit administered oath to the 58-year-old Channi at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan. Congress leader and former law minister Ashwani Kumar has lauded the appointment of Charanjit Singh Channi as a Chief Minister of Punjab, saying it is the "right choice at right time" by the party leadership. "I think the appointment of Channi as a chief minister of Punjab is the right signal to a very large segment of the state population and it will help restore unity in the divided Congress in Punjab," Kumar told ANI.

The Congress on Monday said it will fight Punjab elections under the leadership of chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and PCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and both will be faces of the party. Major administrative reshuffle by new Punjab CM

Soon after taking oath as Punjab chief minister, Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday ordered a major administrative reshuffle. Senior IAS officer Hussan Lal has been appointed as principal secretary to the chief minister in place of Tejveer Singh. Rahul Tiwari has been appointed as special principal secretary replacing Gurkeerat Kirpal Singh, a close aide of former CM Captain Amarinder Singh. (ANI)

The BJP alleged on Monday that the Congress has made Charanjit Singh Channi Punjab chief minister for a few months merely to grab Dalit votes as part of its conspiracy, and cited previous instances of the party giving the key position to a leader from the community only for a short tenure. The BJP fronted its Dalit leaders to target the Congress and dared the rival party to make a public promise that Channi will be its chief ministerial face in Punjab, which faces assembly polls early next year, if it was sincere about its move. The Congress has contradicted Harish Rawat, the Punjab in-charge, on the issue of leadership and said elections will be fought under both the chief minister and the state party president. AICC general Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "Media please do not spread confusion and stop attack on the dalit chief minister. Charanjeet Channi will be our face as chief minister and Sidhu as state president."
