Man gets 12 years in jail for raping mother
Bageshwar: A sessions court in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district sentenced a 28-year-old man to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his 65-year-old mother. District and sessions judge Pankaj Tomar delivered the verdict on Monday and also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on the convict. In case of non-payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on Nov 29, 2024, when the woman had gone to a nearby forest to collect firewood. Her son followed her to an isolated spot and gagged her with a cloth and raped her.
Following the complaint lodged by the woman, the revenue police registered a case under BNS 64(2)(F), which pertains to aggravated rape committed by a person in a position of trust or authority. After the woman underwent a medical examination, her son was arrested. The investigation was later transferred to the regular police on the directions of the district administration, following which a chargesheet was filed in court.
District govt counsel (criminal) Govind Ballabh Upadhyay and assistant district govt counsel Chanchal Singh Papola represented the prosecution. During the trial, the prosecution examined 12 witnesses, including the woman.
After hearing arguments from both sides and examining the evidence on record, the court found the man guilty. The convict, who had been lodged in Almora district jail during the trial, was sent back to prison following the verdict.
