Uttarkashi: The district administration in Uttarkashi has prepared a proposal to install Early Warning Systems (EWS) at four key locations – Gangotri Dham, Kedartal, Harsil and Dharali – to strengthen disaster preparedness across Gangotri Valley. The move, aimed at enabling continuous monitoring of water levels in the Ganga and its tributaries, comes in the wake of the Dharali disaster on Aug 5 last year.
District disaster management officer Shardul Gusain said, “Early Warning Systems have been proposed for Gangotri, Kedartal, Harsil and Dharali, and installation work will begin after govt approval.” He said the system will play a crucial role in monitoring river activity and hill stability during the monsoon season, as well as monitoring geological movements in the surrounding hills.
Officials said the system is intended to issue alerts on sudden fluctuations in the water levels of the Ganga, which originates from Gaumukh, and the Kedarganga, which flows from Kedartal. The system is expected to support timely detection of landslides, heavy rainfall and other geological movements in the hilly terrain. The alerts would enable timely evacuation of residents from sensitive zones.
Officials said work on the initiative gained momentum after last year’s surge in water levels and increased geological activity in Dharali raised concerns among local residents and authorities. Acting on expert advice, the administration drafted the proposal to install EWS in sensitive zones across the valley, aiming to reduce future disaster risks.
