The four inmates — Nabin Buragohain, Amlanjyoti Chetia, Sasadhar Deori, and Huntu Sonowal — had executed a brazen escape on Feb 4 by scaling the jail’s fortified walls using a makeshift rope fashioned from tied clothing. The jail, located in the Chapakhowa area of Sadiya, came under scrutiny following the security breach that allowed all four prisoners to flee simultaneously.Sadiya additional superintendent of police (headquarters) Arunima Bhuyan provided details of the recapture operation on Thursday.“We received information from the jailer around 2 pm that four prisoners had escaped from the jail. Our teams immediately rushed to the jail premises and launched an operation. Within five hours of the escape, we successfully apprehended three of the fugitives — Huntu, Nabin, and Amlanjyoti.
Our teams worked with precision and coordination to track them down quickly. However, Sasadhar remains untraceable at this point, but we are confident of nabbing him very soon,” she said. The ASP confirmed that a department inquiry has been initiated to identify security lapses and determine exactly how the prisoners managed to execute their escape plan.“We are examining all aspects of the incident — from surveillance protocols to guard deployment patterns. We need to find out how four inmates could prepare a rope, scale the tall walls, and escape without detection. This points to serious gaps that must be addressed immediately,” she said. The escape had sparked considerable alarm in the area, with residents questioning security measures at what is supposed to be a secure correctional facility. The fact that prisoners had time to collect clothing materials, fashion a rope, and execute their plan suggested the escape was meticulously planned over several days. The Tinsukia district administration has ordered a probe into the security breach though no action has been taken against the jail staff yet.
