Guwahati: Assam Police arrested a truck driver for transporting 50 empty LPG cylinders that were suspected to be stolen in Kamrup district on Tuesday.
The operation was carried out by officers from Chhaygaon Police Station.
Chhaygaon PS officer-in-charge (OC) Bijoy Duarah said the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence.
“The truck was stationed near Udmuri Chowk, and during the verification process, the driver could not provide valid documents or give any proper reply to our questions,” the OC said.
The driver has been identified as Zahid Khan, a resident of the Mohimari area in Kamrup district. According to the OC, Khan was transporting these cylinders from Meghalaya and was headed towards Goroimari, also in Kamrup district.
“Empty cylinders have significant market value, as they can be refilled and sold to agencies or even on the black market. This has encouraged illegal trade and made it easier for such cylinders to circulate among people,” he said.
The police have seized the cylinders and the truck.
