Manipur organisation appeals for low-key Christmas celebrations

Imphal: Taking into account the ethnic conflict besetting the state, the All Manipur Christian Organisation (Amco) has called upon heads of denominational churches and Christians of the state to keep Christmas celebrations a very low-key affair this year.An apex body of all churches of the state, Amco has appealed to the Christians to forgo community feasts, Christmas lights and decorations and hanging of stars atop churches and houses.Christians account for almost 99% of the entire scheduled tribe population of about 12 lakh in the state.Quoting a verse from the Bible (Romans 12:15) which says “rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep”, the organisation also urged the Christians to donate “our expenses to our suffering brothers and sisters.”In a time marked by suffering and turmoil, Amco, in a statement issued by its president Rev Simon Raomai on Thursday, appealed for a Christmas that “truly embodies the spirit of love, peace and forgiveness and reconciliation as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ.”The organisation mentioned some ritual activities which could be carried out during Christmas, including “candlelight vigils for peace on Christmas eve,” “inter-ethnic community prayers,” “charity drives for the affected families” and “quiet reflective Christmas services.”“Let us heed the words of Matthew 5:9, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God.’ This Christmas, let our action mirror the teachings of Jesus, emphasising our collective aspiration for peaceful and harmonious Manipur,” the statement said.“This is not the time for grand Christmas celebrations. Our family will keep it a low-key affair and will pray for the restoration of peace and harmony in the state,” JS Woryi, a devout Christian from Yaingangpokpi area in Kangpokpi district, said.
