JODHPUR: Communal tension in Jodhpur subsided after a Hindu girl, Pooja Joshi, refused to marry her Muslim boyfriend until he converted to Hinduism. However, the 20-year-old girl, who had eloped with her boyfriend and was brought back to Jodhpur by the police, has chosen to live with a cousin instead of her parents.
Pooja Joshi (20), an undergraduate student had eloped with her boyfriend
Mohsin Khan (a taxi-driver ) on Sunday, following which her family filed a missing complaint.
Following a tip-off, the police detained the couple in Bikaner and brought them back to Jodhpur on Tuesday.
As the news spread across the city, supporters from a few Hindu groups assembled at the police station along with the family members of the girl and terming the matter to be `love Jihad’, shouted slogans at the police station. They also beat up the boyfriend there.
ACP Pooja Yadav said that the girl was taken to the magistrate to record her statements. After that the girl refused to go with her family and chose to go with her cousin. “The girl is not a minor and hence she can choose where she wants to live. We let her go after completing the necessary formalities,” said Yadav.
Although her family members pleaded and scolded her for her decision to stay with a cousin, Pooja did not budge from her decision and left the police station. The girl reportedly maintained that she would marry Mohsin only after he converts and becomes a Hindu. Till then she is ready to wait for him. The girl refused to talk to the media.
This is second such case reported in Jodhpur in the last one month. Early this month, one Payal Singhvi had married one Faiz Modi, a Muslim after converting to Islam by way of an affidavit of Rs 10. He brother, Chirag Modi, had moved a habeas corpus petition in the high court, hearing which, the court had issued notices seeking reply from the state about the guidelines and laws pertaining to religious conversion taking a severe objection to converting of the girl by way of a Rs 10 affidavit.
