According to a Rajasthan Police statement, a bullet grazed Singh, resulting in injuries to his shoulder, and his thigh received injuries as the opium smugglers attempted to run him over.
Police had started the search operation after receiving information that a gang of drug smugglers was travelling in a car loaded with illegal opium along Patlapani Road and heading towards Naya Pura Tower. As a police team was in place to intercept the drug smugglers, SHO Mahaveer Kirad used a flashlight to signal the suspicious car to pull over on the side of the road.
“But the car’s driver tried to flee. As police pursued the car, a man seated beside the driver opened fire at the police party. During an ensuing scuffle, constable Singh sustained an injury and fell to the ground. The car’s driver attempted to run over the fallen constable with the vehicle,” said a police official.
The police team continued to pursue the car, and nearly 100 meters away, near Nayapura Tower, the suspects managed to escape. Police found 13 packets containing over 241 kg of illegal opium in the car’s boot. A country-made pistol and a cartridge were also found on the left seat of the car, said police. The car had a Jaipur number plate, but it did not match with the engine chassis number, said an officer.
