Drive against adulterated food kicks off in Steel City

In preparation for the festive season, the district administration in Jamshedpur, India launched a drive to check the sale of adulterated and unhygienic food. Food safety officials seized samples from sweet shops and sent them for testing. Warning the sellers, they stated that guilty sellers will face action under relevant safety acts. In Seraikela, food safety officials inspected sweet shops and collected samples for testing, warning shopkeepers not to use non-edible colors in sweets. The incidents highlight the need for adherence to food safety guidelines and increased security measures in mines.

JAMSHEDPUR: With festive season here, the district administration, on the direction of East Singhbhum deputy commissioner, Manjunath Bhajantri, launched a drive to check the sale of adulterated and unhygienic food. The food safety officials have seized samples of kaju barfi, besan ka laddoo, peda, gulab jamun, khova barfi, besan (chickpea flour) urad dal (split black lentils) suji (granulated wheat) from four different sweet shops in Mango on Monday, and sent it to the state food testing laboratory in Ranchi.

“The laboratory test report will decide the future course of action,” said district food safety officer, Manzar Hussein.
Warning the sweet sellers not to indulge in adulteration, the food safety official said that guilty sellers will face action under relevant sections of Safety and Standards Act of 2006.
He asked restaurant and eatery owners to also put expiry date information on the display trays of the food items. It is mandatory for the shopkeepers to follow the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines, the official said.
In adjoining Seraikela, food safety official, Aditi Singh, inspected about a dozen sweet shops in Adityapur, Gamharia, Seraikela between Saturday and Tuesday.
The official collected samples of different sweets and snacks for laboratory test. Further, the official asked the shopkeepers not to use the non-edible colours in the sweets. During her inspection, she found Kamdhenu colour sachet in some of the shops. The Kamdhenu sachets are used for colouring clothes.

The raids were conducted after obtaining search warrants from the special vigilance court. Further action will be taken based on the seized documents.
