Heavy rain, dust storms likely in Kanpur division over next 48 hrs
Kanpur: Residents across Kanpur division experienced relatively bearable weather on Sunday, with weathermen predicting heavy rainfall and dust storms in Kanpur division in coming days.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a strong possibility of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by dust storms, while isolated hailstorms may also occur in some areas over the next 48 hours. On Sunday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of around 36°C , about one degree higher than Saturday, while the minimum temperature rose to 25.6°C, indicating warmer nights ahead. South-easterly winds blowing at speeds between 8.7 km/h and 25.3 km/h provided some relief, helping evaporate sweat despite humidity levels reaching up to 65 percent. The IMD has forecast mild sunshine with intermittent cloud cover on Monday across the division. However, high humidity levels are expected to keep both actual temperatures and the heat index moderately elevated.Weather expert Dr S Sunil Pandey from the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology said that rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderclouds is likely from late night into early morning across the region.
He explained that an active western disturbance over North India is driving the current weather pattern, triggering storms and rainfall across the plains from Jammu and Kashmir to Uttar Pradesh. A trough line extending from Northeast to South India is drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal, further aiding rainfall activity. In North Indian states including Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, a ‘yellow alert’ remains in effect, with dusty winds of 30–50 km/h and light rain expected to ease temperatures. Meanwhile, parts of central and eastern India, including Uttar Pradesh (Kanpur division), Bihar and Jharkhand, may witness heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching up to 75 km/h over the next 48 hours.
